CANCELLED: Maple & Walnut Sugaring Workshop at Edgewater Food Forest

Attention: This workshop has been cancelled due to inclement weather. We’re sorry we can’t gather this weekend for this workshop, and if we decide to reschedule the workshop, we’ll update our calendar.

Join BFFC and the Edgewater Food Forest Stewards for their annual winter workshop: Maple & Walnut Sugaring!

Learn the basics of the sugaring process, including identifying suitable trees to tap and tapping and collecting. We’ll also explore storage techniques, tips on boiling down and diluting sap into sweet syrup, and other maple/walnut sugar products. Every year, the Edgewater Food Forest Stewards gather in the winter to tap their Maple and Black Walnut trees. It's a tradition that allows the community to try something new and fun, understand how syrup gets made, and creatively harvest food from their food forest.

The process of making maple syrup allows for endless creativity, so we’ll discuss what kind of professional and ‘lying-around-the-house’ kind of equipment you can use to tap, as well as how to conceptualize what a feasible tapping and boiling setup might look like for you.

This workshop will be led by Alex Klein, longtime instructor with BFFC and experienced herbalist who has frequently worked with the nature at the Edgewater food forest. He has previously led black walnut harvesting and processing workshops, tree identification workshops, and other herbalism workshops with BFFC.

Please reach out to cassidy@bostonfoodforest.org if you have any questions.
